The North Coast 500 is Scotland’s ultimate road trip, stretching 516 miles through some of the Highlands’ most breathtaking scenery. Even a few days exploring a single section of the NC500 can be an unforgettable adventure, filled with dramatic landscapes, fascinating history, local flavours and memorable moments.

The Black Isle and the North Coast 500
Despite its name, the Black Isle is not an island but a beautiful peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, just north of Inverness, and a fantastic early stop on the NC500 route.

Things to See and Do in the Black Isle
Dolphin Watching at Chanonry Point
The Black Isle is famous for its incredible marine wildlife, and dolphin watching here is an absolute highlight. Chanonry Point, near Fortrose, is one of the UK’s best spots to see bottlenose dolphins from land. On a rising tide, these playful creatures often hunt just yards from the shore, giving lucky visitors unforgettable close-up sightings.
For an even more immersive experience, local companies such as EcoVentures offer thrilling RIB tours on the Moray Firth. These trips frequently encounter bottlenose dolphins, as well as harbour porpoises, grey seals, and a wide variety of seabirds. Visit Groam House Museum
In the village of Rosemarkie, Groam House Museum offers a fascinating insight into the Black Isle’s ancient past. Home to one of Scotland’s most important collections of Pictish and Celtic art, it’s a real highlight for anyone with a love of history.
Inside, you’ll find beautifully carved Pictish stones that are hundreds of years old, alongside artefacts that reveal how people once lived in this part of the Highlands. The museum’s local history collection adds another layer, sharing stories of everyday life on the Black Isle through the centuries.
Groam House Museum reopens for the 2026 season from 28 March until late October, making it a perfect addition to your North Coast 500 Black Isle itinerary.
Explore Fairy Glen Nature Reserve
Hidden away in a steep-sided glen, Fairy Glen Nature Reserve is a magical pocket of broadleaf woodland and the perfect place to unwind and connect with nature. A winding footpath leads you through the trees to two charming waterfalls, with the gentle sound of rushing water adding to the peaceful atmosphere.
Wildlife thrives throughout the year. Buzzards often soar overhead, while grey herons can be spotted stalking fish along the stream. In spring, the glen is carpeted with wildflowers, summer brings visitors like the spotted flycatcher, and song thrushes and long-tailed tits are active in the colder months. The brightly coloured bullfinch is a familiar sight for much of the year, adding a splash of colour to the woodland.
Whether you’re exploring in summer or enjoying the quieter winter months, Fairy Glen is a serene and enchanting stop on the Black Isle.
Walk Along Rosemarkie Beach
Rosemarkie Beach is a beautiful spot to stretch your legs on the Black Isle. Its wide sandy shore and dunes make it perfect for a peaceful stroll, while the sound of waves and sea breeze add a touch of magic.
For a bit more adventure, you can follow the Hillockhead Circuit, looping along the rocky shoreline, through woodland paths, and even past waterfalls.
A few practical tips: the shoreline section cannot be completed at high tide, so check the tides before setting off. Wear sturdy footwear, take your time, and enjoy the incredible sights along the way.

Fortrose Bay Campsite is a small and friendly touring site with beautiful views across the Moray Firth. Facilities are clean and well kept, with pitches close to the shoreline. The campsite is within easy walking distance of Fortrose and Chanonry Point.
Kessock Caravan Park
Kessock Caravan Park is a peaceful woodland site on the southern edge of the Black Isle, set within a working farm. The well-kept grounds feature fir trees, broadleaf woodland and abundant wildlife, with red kites often seen overhead. All caravan bays are hard standings and are spaced to offer privacy, creating a relaxed base for exploring the area.
