North Coast 500 Travel Guide: Explore Inverness

The North Coast 500 is Scotland’s ultimate road trip, stretching 516 miles through some of the Highlands’ most breathtaking scenery. You don’t need to complete the entire route to enjoy its magic — even a few days exploring a single section will be an unforgettable adventure, filled with stunning sights, unique experiences, local flavours and memorable moments.

In this blog series, we’re breaking the route into six wonderful regions, so you can savour each one at a relaxed, unhurried pace. We begin our journey in Inverness-shire — the gateway to the Highlands, rich in history, stunning scenery, and experiences waiting to be discovered.

Inverness and the North Coast 500

Often referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands, Inverness marks the official starting point of the North Coast 500. Located on the northeast coast of Scotland, this vibrant city sits beside the beautiful River Ness and offers the perfect blend of city life, Highland charm, and breathtaking landscapes.

Inverness is the ideal base for a short break or day trip, whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family. From historic landmarks and scenic walks to shopping and outdoor adventures, there is truly something for everyone here.

Travel Tip: Arrive in Style on the Caledonian Sleeper

As the hub of the Highlands, Inverness is incredibly well connected — with its own airport, train station, and great bus links from across Scotland and beyond. For something extra special, why not adventure aboard the Caledonian Sleeper from London to Inverness? Enjoy a restful overnight journey and wake up refreshed, ready to explore from the moment you arrive.
