Riding the open roads of the North Coast 500

Bike the UK for MS take on the NC500

When asked where the best cycling destinations in Europe are, you’d be forgiven for saying the likes of Mallorca, The Dolomites or the French Alps. The lovely roads, the beautiful scenery and warm weather make a great case. But what if there was a strong contender just a train ride away in the Highlands of Scotland?

After just two summers of running Bike the UK for MS challenges around the North Coast 500, it’s safe to say the route has become our favourite week long adventure in the UK. The 360 degree views, meandering coastal roads and white sand beaches with mountainous backdrops, make for spectacular riding wherever you are. What more could you ask for?

Following our inaugural ride in 2021, Bike the UK for MS were back for a double dose of the North Coast 500 in 2022. Two intrepid teams, totalling 35 riders, took on the challenge in July and September respectively. Despite tough conditions on both occasions, the teams were up to the task, completing the 500+ mile route with 36,000 feet of elevation over 8 days.

Collectively raising over £36,700 for multiple sclerosis, the team tackled the likes of Bealach na Ba, the infamous 2,000ft climb from Applecross, the windy and exposed north coast as well as an early inland stretch to Lairg before sticking to classic coastal route. Their level of determination was remarkable with every rider beaming with pride on returning to the start/finish line at Inverness Castle.

The teams included a number of riders with multiple sclerosis, which is a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord causing a wide range of symptoms from loss of limb function to blurred vision. Others were riding for loved ones or simply as an opportunity to ride the NC500 whilst supporting and learning about the disease. Over 130,000 people live with MS in the UK, a disease with no cure.

Camping en-route has always been a key aspect of these vehicle supported trips, allowing us to make a greater contribution to the MS community that needs it most. The generosity shown by the local villages was heart-warming from cafes opening their doors to our riders to the likes of Brora Rangers Football Club and Lochcarron Shinty Club allowing us to camp on their grounds. The team were even treated to a luxury night (well a roof over our heads) at the Gairloch Community Centre. We can’t thank everyone enough for support along the way.

As a charity, Bike the UK for MS brings together a community of inspired individuals from all backgrounds, ages and cycling abilities for a common purpose: to raise funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis research, volunteer their time and make a positive impact on the lives of those living with MS. For many years now, the organisation has been supporting local MS Society groups in the Highlands including the Inverness and Nairn Group and Ross-Shire Group. With increasing participation in the area, we hope to grow this support over the coming years and build a closer relationship with the MS community en-route.

Keen to ride the North Coast 500 next year? Why not join Bike the UK for MS for a vehicle supported adventure from July 29th to August 5th and again from September 2nd to 9th. With no sign up fee, a manageable fundraising target of £1.50 per mile (£825 total) and a relaxed small team environment, it’s the perfect way to pedal your way around Northern Scotland.
