Invergordon Mural Town of the Highlands
Invergordon has a unique outdoor art gallery of 11 plus large-scale professionally painted murals celebrating its history and natural heritage. Invergordon was home to the Royal Naval fleet in the past, it is a thriving port with an interesting history, and it is located in a beautiful setting on the Cromarty Firth.
Local Marion Rhind was inspired after hearing about the mural trail in Sheffield, Tasmania, and formed Invergordon Off the Wall in 2002. Community collaboration is the foundation to the whole project’s success.
Now the group is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with the launch of a new website, signage around town and a new guided tour app. Let the artists and all the people involved bring the mural trail to life as you follow the trail around Invergordon from the train station up the High Street to Invergordon Museum. There are some great video clips including artists painting ‘The Way We Were’ and ‘Fire! Fire!’ murals.
Check out one of our favourite features on the app which shows the blank walls fading to reveal the completed mural. You can also become a Mural Detective and complete a quiz on your phone as you visit each mural!
Remember those boards with seaside themes that you could put you head in the holes and become the characters? On the Invergordon Mural Trail, you can take some Souvenir Photo frames via your phone and become a lifeboat crew member, a Drum Major or a Station Mistress! This feature is activated on site only at three of the murals.
The mural trail takes about an hour or so depending on your walking speed. You can take a break at one of the local cafes en route. While you are in town you can also visit the Invergordon Museum, and there are lovely walks along the waterfront towards Saltburn and its community woodland.
If you don’t have a smartphone, there are signs at most of the murals around town telling you about them.
Scan the QR code or follow the links via our website. The app is free to download and there are Just Giving links to make a donation towards the maintenance and on-going development of the mural trail.
