IAM RoadSmart have dedicated more than 60 years to making Britain’s roads safer. They do this by improving the skills of driver and rider through coaching and education, thanks to the thousands of volunteers and hundreds of local groups.
Their flagship Advanced courses give drivers and riders on-road confidence, introduces them to a thriving community of friendly, like-minded people, and helps them rediscover their love for driving and riding. The courses are open to all post-licence drivers and riders.
Advanced courses generally last around 6-12 sessions with an Observer. And once you’re ready, you’ll be put forward for your Advanced Test. Upon completion, you’ll gain ‘Advanced Driver’ and ‘IAM RoadSmart Member’ status.

If you are looking for a refresher rather than an Advanced course, then you may want to consider their Driving Skills Refresher. This 2-hour session is tailored to your needs. So, if you want to focus on parking and manoeuvring, driving on motorways or country roads or tackle overtaking or managing distractions this is the course for you.
They also offer a Rider Development Session. This session provides 4 hours of on-road training aimed at enhancing your riding skills. Customised to meet your specific needs, this session is perfect for any licensed motorcyclist with their own bike, no matter their experience level.
