Tarbat Discovery Centre
Tarbat Discovery Centre is a local heritage museum, learning and activity centre situated on the Tarbat Peninsula, and set within the attractive fishing village of Portmahomack. The site was excavated in the 90s by the University of York and is of national significance being one of the earliest Christian sites in Britain dating from the 6th century. It is the only Pictish monastic site found in Scotland to date -‘The Iona of the East’. The Centre displays many spectacular artefacts and examples of Pictish Art. Nearby are the surviving ‘cross slab’ standing stones of Hilton, Shandwick and Nigg which are among the finest achievements of 8th century European Art. Open from Easter to end of October; details on the website.
