10 Travel Tips for your North Coast 500 Adventure from Park’s Motor Group

The North Coast 500 (NC500) has fast become Scotland’s most iconic road trip. Stretching over 500 miles around the Highlands, it’s a journey of beautiful landscapes, Highland history, pristine beaches, and charming villages.

At Park’s Motor Group, we know that a trip like this isn’t just about the car, it’s about the journey. Here are our 10 essential travel tips to make your North Coast 500 adventure as smooth, safe, and memorable as possible.

Park's Motor Group

1. Don’t Rush It

While the North Coast 500 may “only” be 516 miles long, it’s not a route to be rushed. The roads are often winding and single-track, and the real joy of the journey lies in taking your time to appreciate the breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, and hidden gems along the way. We recommend allowing at least a week to do the route justice but if you can spare longer, all the better. The more time you have, the more freedom you’ll have to explore at your own pace, enjoy the drive, and truly soak in everything the Highlands have to offer.

2. Choose Your Season

Each season on the NC500 brings its own charm, so the best time to go depends on the kind of trip you’re after.

May to September is the most popular time, thanks to long daylight hours, (usually) milder weather, and plenty of events and activities. It’s also when attractions are fully open but expect busier roads and more visitors, especially in peak summer.

Spring and early autumn (April, May, and late September) offer a great balance: lighter crowds, beautiful scenery, and generally good weather.

Autumn and winter are quieter and increasingly popular with those seeking something a little more magical. Think golden landscapes, wildlife, peaceful roads, and even the chance to spot the Northern Lights. Just be aware that some businesses may close for the season.

There’s no bad time to drive the NC500, it all depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

3. Plan Ahead

The North Coast 500’s popularity has surged, especially from May to August. To ensure you secure your preferred accommodation — be it a B&B, hotel, or campsite — it’s advisable to book at least 3 to 6 months in advance. During peak times, properties can fill up quickly, and availability may be limited. Planning ahead ensures you have a place to stay and can help you avoid higher prices or limited options.

4. Be Ready for Any Weather

The Scottish Highlands are known for delivering all four seasons in a single day, sometimes within an hour! Whatever time of year you visit, it’s important to be prepared. Pack waterproofs, warm layers, and sturdy footwear to stay comfortable in changing conditions. If you’re travelling in summer, be sure to bring midge repellent or a midge head net — they might be small, but they can certainly make their presence known. With the right gear, you’ll be ready to enjoy the NC500 come rain, shine, or Highland breeze.

5. Navigating Single-Track Roads

Much of the NC500 winds through remote areas, where single track roads are the norm rather than the exception. These narrow roads can feel a bit daunting if you’re not used to them, but careful driving makes all the difference.

Passing places are your friend here. When you spot an oncoming car, pull into the nearest passing place on your left. If the passing place is on your right, stop opposite it and let the other vehicle through.

Sometimes you’ll need to reverse, especially when larger vehicles are involved. It’s all part of the experience, so take it easy and stay patient. Taking it slow, being courteous, and using passing places properly helps keep everyone safe — and a friendly Highland wave as you pass is always appreciated. 6. Watch Out for Wildlife

The NC500 takes you through some of Scotland’s most natural landscapes, where sheep, deer, and even Highland cows often wander onto the roads. Stay especially alert around bends and during dawn or dusk when animals are most active. Taking extra care helps keep both you and the local wildlife safe.

7. Shop Local

One of the best ways to soak up the spirit of the NC500 is by supporting local businesses. From handcrafted gifts to fresh seafood and unique Highland treats, shopping locally not only helps the communities along the route but also means you’ll take home something truly special — a perfect souvenir or gift to remember your journey.

8. Be Flexible — Make the Route Your Own

You don’t need to complete the full 516-mile loop to capture the spirit of the NC500. Many travellers opt to explore just one stretch, whether that’s the wild west coast or the rugged far north, and still come away with a rich experience.

Let yourself veer off the main route for hidden beaches, remote villages, or lesser-known detours. These unexpected stops often become the most memorable parts of the journey.

9. Leave No Trace

While the North Coast 500 is an incredible road trip for you, for many it’s home. Litter not only spoils the stunning views but can also harm local wildlife and damage the environment. Cleaning up discarded waste is often difficult, costly, and sometimes dangerous.

If you come across full bins or none at all, please don’t leave your rubbish by the roadside. Take it with you and dispose of it responsibly, recycling whenever possible. By leaving no trace, you help keep the Highlands beautiful for everyone to enjoy — locals and visitors alike.

10. Familiarise Yourself with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code

To wrap up our North Coast 500 travel tips, don’t forget to familiarise yourself with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. This guide sets out how visitors should behave when exploring Scotland’s great outdoors, helping to protect the environment, wildlife, and local communities.

The code is built around three simple principles:

By following these guidelines, you’ll help ensure the Highlands remain beautiful and welcoming for everyone. For full details, be sure to read the complete Scottish Outdoor Access Code before your trip.
