Drive in style with a smile!

North Coast Classics – Hire a classic car for your NC500 trip!

Graham Watson of classic car self-drive hire specialists North Coast Classics in Dingwall (“Hire drive in style with a smile!”) asks “Why do classic cars make people smile?

What is it about classic cars that makes people smile? Drivers, other drivers and pedestrians all smile when they drive or even just see a classic. There’s no doubt it happens, but why?

Lots of reasons, probably! Here are a few ideas..

Classic cars bring back happy memories. An age when motoring was more relaxed, and people went out ‘just for a drive’! Fewer cars, and generally travelling more slowly. And a specific car may bring back specific memories. Maybe it was the first family car that you remember, or one which your best friend’s Dad had. Or the one which you wanted but couldn’t afford just after you had passed your test. Or was it the one you had to trade in after you started a family!

Perhaps it’s because classic cars are so green? This may not be so obvious, but when a new car has a design life of only 7 years, a 40 or 50 year old classic has moved on from ‘single use’ six or seven times. And every time it does that it saves the energy normally consumed in the manufacture of a new car. That will certainly bring a smile to your face if you are at all concerned about the environment.

When you see a classic beside a modern car you realise how much smaller older cars were. What was a big family saloon in the 1960’s and 70’s is actually no larger than a modern small hatchback or crossover. Cute old cars make you smile!

Of course modern cars have better technology than classics, better lights, better heating and ……… power steering! But when you drive a classic it will remind you that cars were also pretty good back in the day, were easy to drive, and are well able to keep up with modern traffic. Hire one of our classics and there will be several times during the day when you smile in appreciation (or even mild surprise!) at what an older car can do.

And you will smile at some classic features, whether that is the large steering wheel, or manual window winders. You may even wonder why modern cars don’t have opening quarter lights.

And you will smile even after your hire comes to an end and you are back in your modern car. Especially the first time you use your modern brakes and realise how hard you have had to push the brake pedal in the classic!

But it is the reaction of other people which is most rewarding in the smile count. They will smile and wave as you pass. They will want to come and chat. Other drivers will be more courteous. And you will automatically be made welcome wherever you stop.

There’s no better way to drive the NC500 than in a classic car. Miles of smiles guaranteed!
