Business of the Month: Dunnet Bay Distillers

Martin Murray, one half of Dunnet Bay Distillers alongside his wife Claire, discusses the NC500 route and how it has affected their business.

1. Hi Martin, can you tell us a little about yoursself and your business?

Along with my wife we are the owners of Dunnet Bay Distillers Ltd.  We have a wee distillery in our home village of Dunnet, where we make Rock Rose Gin and Holy Grass Vodka.

2. To what extent has the launch of the NC500 impacted your business?

It has been incredible. We have more visitors that we expected and our sales have reflected this. It has been such a success that we have commenced plans in order to build a shop for 2017.

3. What is the biggest change you have witnessed since the launch of the NC500?

The tourist season has been extended. We had visitors in February and we are still running tours at the end of October.

4. Are you aware of how it has impacted the community and other local businesses close by?

We’ve only heard positive things from businesses in Caithness.

5.  What opportunities do think is possible for existing and new business along the route?

There are big opportunities for existing businesses. We plan to implement and increased offering to tourists in terms of exclusive editions and experiences.

6. How is the NC500 Business Club membership helping your business?

It has been very good at raising awareness of our business. This is reflected in our visitor numbers and shop sales. In addition the social media and marketing are excellent. (Aw shucks, thank you!)

7. Do you have any tips for fellow businesses along the route?

Make the most of press visits, and help tourists by giving them your local knowledge.  It’s your chance to be an ambassador for your area!

8. What do you hope for the future of the North Coast 500?

I hope the route will become an all year tourist route. One where people come to drive under the northern lights or to see snow topped hills.
