Discover the attractions in Wester Ross worth that extra mile
Whilst we hope to promote the North Coast 500 as a designated route throughout the North Highlands of Scotland, we really want everyone to explore the places in and near the route too! There are hundreds of things to see and do that require that extra mile for the whole Highland experience!
Go ‘off the beaten track’ and discover the villages and hamlets off the route. Discover your own hidden gems. Check out our itineraries for inspiration and our ‘what to see and do area’ of our website.
Handy Information about your adventure
- The Bealach na ba -this notorious stretch of road is notorious for three things; the steep gradients and sharp turns… and the simply breath-taking scenery! Driving the Bealach na Ba requires skill and complete attention to the road ahead.
- If you decide to drive the Bealach na Ba as part of your North Coast 500 journey then, as with the rest of the route, we would encourage you to be cautious and allow overtaking. Please also note that if you cannot accurately reverse your vehicle several hundred yards on a narrow single track, then you cannot safely drive over the Bealach. However, the Bealach na Ba is a simply breathtaking drive, and one which should be experienced if you are able to do so.
Some visitors to the North Highlands may not feel comfortable driving the Bealach na Ba, or may encounter situations which cause the road to be closed. The Bealach may be closed during the winter months due to ice and snow. If the road is not open during your NC500 travels, don’t miss out the opportunity to visit Applecross. Take the road up the A896 instead and join the alternate road via Shieldaig (C1091 Shieldaig to Applecross coast road). This route is also recommended for drivers of large motorhomes and cars towing caravans; the Bealach na Ba isn’t suitable for these types of vehicles due to its hair pin bends and steep gradients. If your motorhome is larger than a standard VW T5 conversion (16-18 feet in length), then take the alternate route via Shieldaig instead.
