Bike Shops and Cycle Repairs on the NC500 Route
As part of Karen Newman’s series on cycling the NC500 – Karen has provided some information on bike shops and cycle repairs on the North Coast 500.
Settlements of any size on the NC500 are few and far between, bike shops are even rarer.
In the event of a mechanical issue between bike shops, your only options are:
- Self-help with mail order of spare parts from one of the local shops set up for this,
- Help from a local cyclist,
- The mobile service of a bike shop based in Muir of Ord.
Inverness – there are 4 or 5 bike shops in Inverness, useful if you have forgotten anything or to stock up before you head off.
Bike workshops around the NC500 can currently (May 2018) be found in the following towns and villages.
This may change so check the Facebook guide https://www.facebook.com/NC500cyclingguide/ for more details and more up-to-date information. (NB: a google search brings up a shop in Ullapool which was closed in 2017)
Muir of Ord – 16 miles west of Inverness between Beauly and Contin
Strathpeffer – about 22 miles NW of Inverness, 3 miles off A835 between Contin and Dingwall.
Dingwall – 15 miles north-west of Inverness
West Coast – Although there is currently only the one bike workshop at Scourie, there are keen cyclists living here, some of whom do their own servicing and repairs. We are a friendly bunch over this way and if you let it be known that you have a problem with the bike, you could find offers of help being made!
Scourie – between Ullapool and Durness.
Thurso – north coast, east
Wick – east coast, north
Golspie – mid east coast on the A9 (near the Highland Wildcat mountain bike centre).
Bonar Bridge – mid east coast on A949 about 10 miles south of Lairg (near the Carbisdale and Balblair mountain bike centres).
