You can view the paintings and buy the products, but the only way to properly experience the wealth of arts and crafts along the North Coast 500 is to fully immerse yourself in them! We’ve highlighted four wonderful local ideas here, to help get you inspired…

Create your own signature perfume!

The Fragrant Mind is a small family run business, with a mission to deliver high quality, unique, handmade and natural soaps, shampoo, perfumes, balms, candles, and much more. All products are carefully created by Olga, who specialises in creating bespoke products based on personal needs and preferences.

The Fragrant Mind specialises in small – often one-to-one – friendly, and easy-to-follow product-making workshops, such as ‘Create Your Own Signature Perfume,’ ‘Bath Bomb Making’ and ‘Formulating Balms, including Lip Balms.’

Silver Jewellery Making at Golspie Gallery

At Golspie Gallery, you can book jewellery or print making workshops.
These are run on demand; contact the Gallery with your choice of date/s to check tutor availability.

Their in-house jeweller, runs beginner’s classes, working one-to-one, or with a group of up to 4 (min age 18). Choices include making silver rings, bangles or chains, silk knotting pearls, hand painting and shaping aluminium, creating earrings or learning chainmaillie. Spend 2- 4 hours in the studio getting hands on, and then continue on your journey wearing what you’ve made!

A local printmaker supplies and also teaches in the Gallery. From taster sessions lasting a couple of hours, to full day more in-depth experiences, you can create your own piece of artwork from lino cut, fabric block printing, dry point etching or monoprint. 1 to 6 people can be accommodated (min age 16 unless with an adult). Just bring your imagination!

Do also watch out for other creative workshops that may be running at Golspie Gallery during your trip. They even let studio space for a day, or longer. Why not give yourself some dedicated creative time in the inspiring surroundings of the north?

Harmony Hand Spinning Studio

Immerse yourself in the spinning experience, and learn how to transform these local, natural fibres into modern yarns, ready to be crafted into a range of fabulous designs. Studio owner Ann is ready to share her wealth of knowledge and expertise in this traditional craft. Stop by when your visiting Caithness, Ann is located in Dunnet.

Multi Arts Centre

Lyth Arts Centre is a multi-arts centre in Caithness, presenting a year-round programme of live performance. From some of the most exciting small-scale touring companies in Scotland to internationally acclaimed artists, the programme includes music, theatre, dance, comedy and much more. This summer Lyth Arts Centre are presenting a contemporary visual arts exhibition celebrating the role of women in Caithness, combining local heritage with contemporary visual art. There is also a programme of events during the day and in the evenings. ‘Wifeys: Caithness Women’ is free to the public and open daily from 29 June to 9 September 2018.

Lyth Arts Centre is a hidden gem between Wick and Thurso, just a short detour of the NC500 route. Pop in for teas, coffees, homemade cakes and local produce in our cosy lounge and garden.
